I can't think of two topics that get AR owners fired up more than discussing "What is the best Zero for your AR?" and "What is the best lube for your AR?". Its kind of like discussing politics and religion with your liberal relatives at the Thanksgiving Dinner table.

So here goes - I use a 50/200 zero and lube with Mobile 1 Synthetic Oil and Mobile 1 Synthetic Grease. "She" likes to run hot and wet!

ps. There is no "best" - it's what works for you.

Far be it from me to squelch a good argument, but wouldn't both of those choices depend on how much/often the AR is fired, and at what distance the shooter is able to see the target?

Kind of the point, amigo. There is no "best". It totally depends on your situation and preferences. Yet people get really fired up over it. See the ps in the OP.

50/200 whether open sights, red dot, or magnified scope. CLP is my preference, but whatever lube is at hand, everything works good. Even my lever gun with semi-buckhorns and a barely super sonic load is still sighted in for 200.

50 yards for my pistol caliber carbines - all equipped with some type of optic. 100 yards for my rifles - all equipped with some type of optic. The longest target I shoot at is 125 yards.

I'm kind of an AR novice. What does a 50/200 yard zero mean?

Is the lower number iron sights, and the larger number an optic?

Here is another graph to give you an idea of a 55 grain bullet out of a 16" barrel.
    bullet.jpg

As you can see... the 5o yard zero has the flattest trajectory and would be great for open sights or "set it and forget it" and hold over , under, dead on, etc ..which is great/faster depending on the size of the target.

If you have a high powered scope with target turrets, zero at a 100 yards might make more sense...you have a choice of hold (large target) or make 1/4 inch or 1/8 adjustments at 100 yards (depending on MOA scope) for precision shooting.

I run an eotech on my main AR. So it’s sighted to 50/200 on the Center dot. Which makes the bottom hash mark where it intersects the large circle 7 yards.
